European project in common with Lyon:

From their beginnings in 1981, relations between Lyon and Leipzig (Germany) have strengthened over the years due to the large number of cooperation projects. Leipzig's great cultural tradition has heavily influenced the nature of the exchanges between the two cities. Between 2004 and 2008, Lyon and Leipzig also testified to their strategic European position by occupying in turn the presidency of the network of European cities, EUROCITIES. Leipzig was one of the first cities to join the international networks initiated by Lyon: LUCI and Délice.

Lyon - Leipzig (Germany) cooperation, key dates

2006 marked the 25th anniversary of the partnership between Lyon and Leipzig: relying on the participation of the French Institute in Leipzig and the Goethe Institute in Lyon, some thirty cultural projects were organised for the occasion. These partnerships gave rise to long-term cooperation between the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Lyon and the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. In the musical domain, exchanges have also developed between the Conservatoire National de Région and the Johann Sebastian Bach Musikschule.

In 2009, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, Leipzig organised a festival of light to pay homage to the "Peaceful Revolution" which had opened the way for the fall of the Berlin wall and the reunification of Germany in 1989. For the occasion, the City of Lyon co-produced a light installation on the façade of the emblematic church on the Tröndlinring.

Since 2008, the departments of the City of Lyon and the Greater Lyon Authority - with the support of the Franco-German Office for Youth - have, every summer, welcomed some ten young francophone students for a "seasonal job".

In 2013, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of the Élysée, a number of round tables on the economy were organised in Leipzig with the participation of economic stakeholders from Lyon.
