Techtera technical textiles competitiveness cluster
Techtera (Technical Textiles Rhône-Alpes) received competitiveness cluster accreditation from the CIADT on 12th July 2005. It became an official association on 9th November 2005.
Technical and functional textiles are high-performance products with specific properties designed for different types of use. The term technical textiles can refer to woven, knitted and non-woven textiles covering many different areas of application. The textiles also have a variety of different properties: high resistance, fire-retardant, antimicrobial, water-proof, anti-UV, etc.
The aim of the Techtera competitiveness cluster is to create a link between innovative players in this sector.
Techtera actors
- One hundred SME’s/SMI’s and major companies in the technical textiles sector
- Local authorities including Greater Lyon
- Technical centres
- Public and private research laboratories
The cluster’s president is Jean-Charles Potelle, and it is managed by a group of 5 representatives
The ambition of Techtera
- To create dynamic links between companies in the sector
- To encourage value creation through innovation
- To make the Techtera cluster a European centre of excellence for technical and functional textiles (TTF)
The objective of Techtera
- To position the Rhône-Alpes region as a European point of reference for the cluster’s key markets
- To encourage and support multi-partner projects
- To tap into existing human and financial resources to support innovative projects
- To manage the industrial community and skills centres in order to improve their competitiveness
Techtera and Greater Lyon
Since the cluster was created, Greater Lyon has:
- supported 5 projects *
- grants to a total of €600,000 *
* out of a total of 40 projects and €45 million, between 2006-2008.
Technical and functional textiles in Rhône-Alpes
The Techtera competitiveness cluster is based in Ecully, near Lyon. Rhône-Alpes is the leading textiles region in France, with:
- 65% of all French manufacturing output (more than 300,000 tonnes),
- 12% of European output and
- 70% of national turnover.
It includes leading international companies and a densely-packed population of SME’s/SMI’s. Well-known technological players such as the Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique (CEA), the Institut des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA), the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and the IFTH (Institut Français du Textile et de l'Habillement) are organised into projects and clusters throughout the region.
