The cradle of French chemistry, the Chemical Valley, is changing. Boosted by the development of the Axelera competitiveness cluster, many projects are emerging in the field of the environment in line with Greater Lyon’s desire and ambitions.
The revival of historic area
As the southern gateway to the urban area, the Chemical Valley spans both banks of the Rhone from the 7th arrondissement (Port Edouard Herriot) to Solaize.
Clean technologies, a strategic choice
Greater Lyon, in its Master Plan to Welcome Businesses, has today identified the Chemical Valley as a strategic region for the establishment of clean technology related businesses.
So the next few years will see:
- the development of the business activities that produce new materials and processes
- to meet the energy efficiency and environmental objectives displayed in the framework of the Lyon Urban area strategy.

A reception area for eco-businesses
Creation of a reception area for eco-businesses dedicated to waste processing, recycling and recovery
- a Greater Lyon’s initiative
- created by the EM2C Group
- on a 15 ha site
- with an “eco responsible” urban approach based on the principles of sustainable development
Upcoming opening of:
- a SITA DEEE hub
- for the treatment of waste from electrical and electronic equipment,
- a RE-SOURCE Industry hub
- for the dismantling of vehicles at the end of their life span
They will be added to the businesses processing and recycling materials developed in the Chemical Valley.

With the Chemical Valley as its epicenter, Axelera aims to accelerate the construction of an industrial and scientific sector of international dimension that combines chemistry and the environment.

The Chemical Valley in figures
- over 800 hectares,
- a dozen establishments in the chemical-petrochemical, fuel and fuel gas industries representing more than 6,500 direct jobs.
- 6 research centers for: Rhodia, Arkema, Bluestar Silicones, Total, the French Petroleum Institute and a joint Rhodia/CNRS research unit dedicated to polymer composite materials complete the offering.
