Culture and integration

Les Pointillés (Biennale de la danse 2008)

Artistic and cultural support constitutes a tool for boosting socio-professional integration. Such support includes

  • access to culture, access to cultural activities and
  • participation in the creation of artistic activities and events.

A strong alliance between social and cultural

The work of ALLIES (the PLIE for the city of Lyon), supported by the Maison de l'Emploi et de la Formation de Lyon (Lyon Employment and Training Centre), provides methodological support for the action partnership between professional integration organisations and cultural project leaders.

Assessment of the impact of mobilisation through artistic action

The outcomes of 78 PLIE beneficiaries who participated in cultural integration activities were compared with the outcomes of other PLIE beneficiaries.

The average duration of cultural integration activities was 26 months.

Population concerned by these activities:

  • 75% are female,
  • 59% receive the RMI,
  • 60% are aged between 36 and 50,
  • 32% are educated to CAP or BEP level.

Added value provided by these measures:

  • they boost integration efforts: more regular contact with supervisors, access to employment for certain participants, development of professional and personal plans, etc.
  • they have a positive effect on individual behaviour: greater openness towards others, enhanced personal expression, progress in learning French, reduced psychological barriers regarding access to mobility, etc.

These activities meet a crucial need, namely reinforced employment support for participants.

Capitalisation and extension of these practices to all parts of the urban area.

A survey among cultural organisations was carried out following the 2007 Culture & Insertion : entre représentations et réalités ("Culture & Integration: from representations to realities") event, in which the following people participated:

  • the director of the Opera National de Lyon,
  • the director of the Ô Totem MJC in Rillieux-la-Pape, and
  • the director of the Banlieues d'Europe network.

Research studies

A number of research studies regarding cultural action for people in delicate situations have been produced.

These research studies illustrate the current situation, while at the same time seeking to pass on this information and these experiences to other sectors concerned.
