Lyon’s expertise in light appreciated in Leipzig:
On 9 October 2014, in the context of the commemoration of 25 years of the German Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig, Lyon – recognised internationally for its lighting scheme and its Festival of Light - has been asked by its partner city to organise a lighting installation. Entitled “I vote, I build”, the original creation of Lyon’s young talent Jonathan Richer from the Theoriz Crew group, is a homage to democracy and will occupy the monumental façade of Leipzig's new City Hall, a stopping point in Leipzig's Festival of Light organised for the anniversary of the peaceful revolution.
A historic event:
On 9 October 1989 in Leipzig, 70,000 demonstrators thronged the streets of Leipzig to signal their opposition to the regime of the GDR. With the slogans “We are the people” and "No violence”, they laid the groundwork for major geopolitical change: one month later came the fall of the Berlin wall! Leipzig is celebrating this historic event with a trail of around thirty light installations. Lyon could not miss this very strong evocation of History and thus demonstrate the links which bind it to the city of Leipzig.
Lyon is exporting its know-how:
This project fits perfectly in the international strategy of Lyon’s Festival of Light as it “exports” its know-how and offers its expertise and artists from its region to various other festivals.
Following Dubai in 2013, it was the city of Xi’an in China which suggested a light installation by the Lyon creator Philippe Morvan from 1 to 10 October in the context of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China.
In Birmingham – a city twinned with Lyon - the artistic team Pitaya and the director of the Lyon Festival of Light will be there on 24 and 25 October 2014 for the first festival organised in a district of the city
