Description

Over 32 years, the partnership between Lyon and Leipzig has progressed from formal relations to the running of numerals projects involving cultural stakeholders from both cities, such as, for Lyon: The regional conservatory of the Region, the National Fine Arts School, the municipal library, the festival of light, the printing museum, the Centre for the History of the Resistance and Deportation.

Leipzig which has been working for 20 years on its industrial regeneration is now asserting its position in Europe as an attractive city for young artists and entrepreneurs. In the space of 10 years, the unemployment rate has fallen from over 20% to 10% with the leading sectors being the automotive industry and life sciences.  Lyon and Leipzig now wish to reinforce their economic cooperation, and to this end the director of the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and Industry joined the delegation which was welcomed to Lyon in October.

A number of projects were launched when the delegation was received in Lyon:

  • the introduction in 2014 of a conference on “the role of the business in supporting culture” in partnership with the two Chambers of Commerce.
  • meetings about the German resistance in Lyon and in Leipzig during the Second World War will be organised in 2014 at the Centre for the History of the Resistance and Deportation.
  • the establishment of an artists' residency in both Lyon and Leipzig with the support of the French Institute and the City of Lyon.
  • the reaffirmed will to continue the annual reception, which has taken place every July since 2009, of 10 graduates from the Reklam Gymnasium in Leipzig for practical training in the departments of the City and Grand Lyon. This work experience has been supported since 2009 by the Office Franco Allemand de la Jeunesse.
