International relations, Lyon - Guangzhou (China)
With the installation in 1921 of the Franco-Chinese Institute - the only Chinese university outside China - Lyon played a pioneering and major role in the 20th century in the diffusion of knowledge of Chinese culture, not only in France but throughout Europe. During these exchanges, special relationships have been forged with Guangzhou since 1988.
Lyon - Guangzhou (China) cooperation, key dates
In 2002, the city of Guangzhou joined the LUCI network (Lighting Urban Community International), an association of cities and light professionals created at Lyon's initiative.
Between 2003 and 2005, the many events organised in the context of the cultural exchange programme between France and China helped promote the cultural institutions and stakeholders in the two cities. To launch this Franco-Chinese cultural exchange programme, Lyon received a visit from the Mayor of Guangzhou and the Vice-Prime Minister of China. Lyon was one of the French cities most invested in these intercultural events and the exchanges have given rise to an unprecedented partnership between the historic Liwan district of Guangzhou and the 7th district of Lyon, while Lyon artists have seen their work exhibited in the Guangdong Museum of Art.
In 2013, the two cities celebrated the 25th anniversary of their twinning on the occasion of an official delegation led by the Mayor of Lyon to Guangzhou. On this occasion, a business delegation was organised to boost relations between the economic stakeholders of Lyon and Guangzhou. On a cultural level, a regular exchange of works between the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon and the New Library of Guangzhou - one of the most modern in China - was put on an official footing.
