Lyon and Gothenburg (Sweden) have, since 1998, pursued a partnership based essentially on economic cooperation via the Renault Trucks group. Indeed, the subsidiary of the Volvo group - also Europe's leading HGV manufacturer - is based in Lyon. Sharing the same objectives, the Aderly (Lyon development Agency) and the Gothenburg Business Region are cooperating in this project.

Lyon - Gothenburg (Sweden) cooperation, key dates

In 2007, Gothenburg joined Lyon in its network of gastronomic cities, Délice.

In 2008, the two cities started a joint three-year project, within a programme of interregional cooperation supported by finance from Europe: the CLUSNET project. In the context of a cluster support policy, Lyon and Gothenburg joined forces to create a network of European cities (Barcelona, Budapest, Dortmund, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Helsinki, Leipzig, Manchester, Munich). The objective? To create a platform for exchanges about strategies and good practices of the large agglomerations in the area of political and technical support for the development of competitiveness clusters.

In 2009, a new official pact was signed, relating to the focuses of economic cooperation, in particular the continuation of cooperation in the automotive, social, administrative and cultural areas.

In 2010, the Swedish city organised an event called "City on Tour" on the theme of sustainable development and fishing activities in order to encourage meetings and exchanges of know-how between technicians in Lyon and Gothenburg.

In the cultural area, Gothenburg has a lot in common with Lyon. Like Lyon, Gothenburg can depend on a thriving cultural offer with the presence of an opera house, a national symphony orchestra, 25 theatres - including one municipal theatre - 20 museums, 24 local libraries, Scandinavia's largest cinema festival and a major science festival. In 2010, a cultural visit provided the opportunity for in-depth exchanges of practices between the two cities.
