Following the remarkable increase in business demand between 2003 and 2008 (29% more overnight stays in 4* hotels and 20% more in 3* hotels), Lyon’s hotels seem to have overcome the difficulties facing the French tourism and hotel sector. This is despite a slight decrease in footfall since 2007.
This continual expansion since the start of the century has seen a remarkable increase in the average price and average income in each category, as well as an increase in the total volume of rooms available.
Lyon’s hotels, including 4* establishments, managed to resist the economic difficulties encountered in 2009, suffering less than the majority of large cities in France.
High-quality hotel facilities
Lyon’s hotel facilities have grown by 1,000 rooms since 2003, with a total capacity of 11,900 officially-recognized rooms as at the end of December 2009.
These are divided between 190 hotels, 100 of which are in Lyon itself.
Lyon enjoys a favorable position on the business tourism “map”:
- whereas the average percentage of 3* and 4* hotels in France is 36%,
- Greater Lyon boasts a rate of 42 %, higher than the majority of other major cities.
Increasing income per room in the majority of categories
Lyon has become a more competitive city in recent years, with:
- the development of major facilities such as:
- the 3,000-seat Amphitheater at the Convention Center,
- several extensions to the Eurexpo exhibition center
- marketing campaigns run by the Conventions Department of the Greater Lyon Tourist Office.
In 2009, the average room rate for luxury 4* hotels remained stable at €166, and €109 for standard 4*.
The average Revenue per available room grew by 17% between 2004 and 2009.
