Commerce in Greater Lyon
Trading is one of the key functions of urban life. It represents a space of social encounter and a strong social connection.
To maintain a balance between the development of commercial centres on the city's edge and inner city businesses, since 1994, Greater Lyon follows a commercial urban planning master plan, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Trade and the General Council, thus creating the conditions for successful setting-up.

Retail is a major economic sector within the Lyon urban area. It:
- has a turnover of €6.7 billion,
- employs 17% of private-sector workers (100,000 jobs) and
- represents 22% of companies (22,600 companies).
